Merak nació en la tierra [de padres alienígenas, obviamente], así que, como muchos otros Homeless, creció formándose a medias entre la cultura humana y la alienígena. Cuando le salieron todos los dientes definitivos, sus padres, consternados, se percataron de que algunos de ellos estaban bastante descolocados, y siguiendo la tradición humana de aquellos que pueden permitírselo, decidieron ponerle a Merak una ortodoncia. Los primeros días fueron los peores. Todos los dientes se le movían como si estuvieran por saltar de sus encías y buscarse una vida mejor, y apenas podía hacer fuerza para masticar, porque el dolor era importante. Y así se pasó algo más de año y medio, hasta que un buen día, se lo quitaron. Y le dieron, a cambio otro, muy feo, que debía llevar solamente por las noches. Y lo más curioso del caso es que Merak nunca, ni antes, ni durante, ni después de todo el proceso de llevar correctores dentales, sufrió ni el menor vestigio de un trauma.

Merak was born on earth [to alien parents, of course], and so, like many other Homeless, she grew up halfways between human and alien culture. When her teething was complete and finished, her parents, filled with dismay, noticed that her teeth had settled in a subtle disorder, and so, following the human habits of those who can afford it, they decided to get her some braces. The first few days were the worst. All her teeth were moving wildly as if they were planning to leap off her gums and go sort out their lives; she could barely chew her meals, since she was in some important pain. And so, like a year and a half went by, and then one day her braces were removed. And she was given the ugliest retainer ever, for the nights only. And the funny thing in all this is that Merak never, before, during, or after this process ever felt the slightest trace of a trauma.
